Polymer Modified Mortar
Polymer modified mortar is made by mixing
polymer admixture with water, Portland cement and sand. This addition of
polymer with water increases its performance and economical to use. Above that
it also increases workability, toughness, flexural or tensile strength. It
enhance adhesion, resistance to chemicals.
Polymer modified mortar also requires less
water compared to traditional mortar which results in a more dense mortar with
fewer pores.
How
Polymers Improve Mortar Properties?
Strength
and Durability
It improves its tensile strength impact and
abrasion resistance, water resistance, and chemical resistance as compared
to other mortar without using polymers. It hinder the micro-crack propagation
which improves the overall toughness of the mortar.
Workability
Mortar made with polymer has more fluid and
easy to handle and apply. It has a less water thus it has less voids and make
it muchstrong. It can take long time during hydration process that increases
working time which is beneficiary to hot climate.
Adhesion
It improves the adhesion of mortar to
different surfaces like concrete, masonry, brick, wood, rigid polystyrene and
polyurethane foam, glass, and metals. It is tough to use in a very thin
section overlay mortar applications and where heavy traffic excessive
vibrations occur.
Cement Curing
Curing is the major concern factors as it
controls strength. In this water requirement is sufficient to have proper
curing in the early day such as one to seven days. Polymer used mortar has less
water evaporation rate so it is used in thin application where the surface area
for evaporation is high, relative to the volume of the mortar.
Drying shrinkage is less as compared to
ordinary mortar as in this polymer modified mortar water requirement is less.
Types
of Polymers
Ø Latex polymers
Ø Redispersible dry polymers (such as ethylene vinyl acetate)
Ø Water soluble polymers like polyvinyl alcohol
